Biography
Timothy Bates is a studying the Bachelor of Composition and Music Technology at the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) and in his final year. He has composed works in many distinctive styles including Dance, Film, Chamber music, Pop and Electronic music. 2016 was a particularly big year for him where he completed an overseas exchange in Canada where he studied under Professor Allan Bell (JUNO award winner 2014), at the University of Calgary. He also received a commission for the inaugural Connecticut Summerfest Concert series held in Hartford, Connecticut, where his piece ‘Breach’ received its international premiere. During his time in Hartford he received a commission from the ‘Deciduous Trio’ for Harp, Flute and Viola to be performed at the American Harp Society.
During his time at WAAPA he won awards at the Revel-8 Film festival consecutively in 2013 and 2014 and prior to the commencement of his Bachelor’s degree he worked on a Dance theatre production ‘Home Alone’ which won two WADA (West Australian Dance Awards) in 2009.
He started his introduction to music on the drum set, which has seen him tour internationally and nationally numerous times and supported notable artists: The Divinyls, Chris Isaac and The Bamboos to name a few. Since he has undertaken his studies in composition he has been lucky enough to have some of his compositions performed by some incredibly talented performers in Perth including: Stewart Smith, David Wickham, Lindsay Vickery, Tristen Parr and Madeline Antoine.
